OK, this car has taught me more about automatic transmissions that I could have ever hoped, and I'm still learning. It has had shifting problems since i bought it but with a few fluid changes (the first one was BAD) and a filter change I've closed the book on most of the issues. however, it still doesn't like to shift properly.
1) It shifts up at 5200 RPM
2) At a stop light (engine running at low RPM shift lever engaged in D), it will remain in whatever gear it is in prior to slowing and stopping, usually 2nd.
a) does not downshift if moved to park, and back to drive
b)
3) If at said stoplight the car is turned off and restarted, the transmission downshifts to first.

4) If you start off in a gear selection other than D (say, 2) and shift to D at a reasonable RPM (say, 2500, about when you'd expect it to shift) it shifts "properly"
a)conversly if you move the gear selector to second while in a higher gear, the vehicle downshifts

From what I've seen here and there this model doesn't respond well to aftermarket electronics, which the previous owner did install, so tomorrow I plan to hunt down and remove various non oem wires I've seen. in addition, according to my Haynes manual there is an oil temperature sensor connector, a pulse generator connector and a kickdown servo switch connector that I plan to inspect. (Particularly the oil, as that gauge doesn't register inside the vehicle.) I also plan to inspect the linkage, to see if it has any play, and to just clean it, as it's dirty.

I'd love to hear from anyone with an idea beyond those. Thanks
