Ford Escort won't shift down to regular drive gear

I have a 1997 Ford Escort with an automatic transmission. Last night when I was leaving I couldn't shift the car into drive. Park, reverse, neutral and Overdrive(?) are fine, but the car willnot shift into regular drive!!! I'm on disability and can't afford another car and tranny problems always seem to be a HUGE expense. ANy help as to what the problem MIGHT be will at least arm me with some information to avoid getting ripped off!!! HELP!
