2001 ford truck tranny

Jumped in truck to drive to town , noticed after I got to hiway speed that it whined out to 3400 rpm's before it wound back down. Husband looked at it and said that 3rd geer was gone. checked fluid and it did not look or smell burnt. Up to this time no one had noticed any problems with it. This 2001 has an automatic transmission. We did just get it back from having the engine wiring fixed after a mouse chewed through the coil pack wire. Just wondering if we can expect a big repair bill.
