if the car still moves, is it the transmission?

my '99 subaru outback was running fine, then while driving friday, there was a "thunking" feeling/sound like I had a flat tire. I pulled over and everything thing was fine. The "thunking" happens when I try to go forward or in reverse. The car was undriveable so I had it towed to my mechanic who says I need a new transmission. there were no "check engine" lights. a couple of days before, I noticed that the rpm would be high enough that I thought I would hear the gears change, but they didn't. is this a transmission problem or what?
