2002 Chrysler 300 tranny slipping

I have a 2002 chrysler 300. My fluid is good it don't smell burnt and does not leak. I was driving it home and heard a whinning sound the very next day I was driving it and when u slow down it pops out of drive. The check engine light has been on for 6 months I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. The transmisson seems to be very strong. I have'nt had any problems with the car before. Where do I start.
