Sarah, FYI: I am not a transmission professional.

You have things generally right. A longer drive is better (20 mins to be sure) because the fluid should be up to full operating temperature and it does expand with heat.

On some cars the transmission is to be left in neutral rather than park. This information will be contained in your owner's manual. If you don't have one of those it would be a good idea to find one on the web. I found one for my Ford Escort free online from Ford. Or you may need to buy one but they're not that expensive.

But to answer your question sooner rather than later about the Mazda you could call your local dealer's service dept. The phone calls, at least, are free.
