Hard shift and Whiney noise

I have a 2003 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 extended cab Z71.
We pulled our travel trailer down and up the Salt River Canyon in Arizona twice over the weekend and on the way back the transmission started shifting very hard and on steep up grades sometimes would make the whiney noise. I know that I have never changed the oil and filter (on the transmission) I have 72000 miles on the truck .what advice would you give me as to where do I start?
